War-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Lt. Robert H. Crist (1829-1912), Co. L, 1st Ind. Hvy. Artillery], New Orleans, La., July 30, 1864, in part: "…our colonel [John A. Keith] is "nobody" and the officers are quite dissatisfied. He promotes men into companies from outside and does not consult the Co. officers. The Col. does a great many things for spite. Men & officers call him the little man with the Brass collar. The Col. was a country lawyer but knows nothing about military affairs…we are now quartered in the lower part of the city where they are all french & niggers, spanish, mexicans & about all secesh. Lotts of girls & women that call themselves creoles. They are pretty dark but since darkees are free everything is white…the Rebs are coming down on the west side of the river from Red River in strong force. they might annoy our river transportation some but they cannot cross the river…Capt. [Francis W.] Noblett…of Co. F was captured at Brashear City last year…and was held a prisoner till just 3 months. He tells a hard story. He is going home…there are few troops left here……your most obit. son, R. H. Crist…we have a new chaplain [Jasper J. Moss] a regular numskull. everybody making fun of him. The boys will not listen to him preach. He is a nigger worshiper--D-m the nigger…". The original transmittal cover is included. VG.
