War-date Union officer's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Lt. Robert H. Crist (1829-1912), Co. L, 1st Ind. Hvy. Artillery], Levee Steam Cotton Press, New Orleans, La., Oct. 6, 1864, in part: "…I have about $20,000 worth of property in my charge to look after…every body is disposed to steal, it takes watching…the yellow fever is very bad in the 4th district near the Alabama Cotton Press. They have guards on several streets…it came in on some gunboat…we don't hear much of politics except what we hear. We are pretty well satisfied that Lincoln will be elected. The Rebs are so jubilant over McClellan's nomination that Mc's friends in the Federal army are ashamed of him…we have 209 guns in our yard…all 30 pdr. Parrots & 8 mortars, have about 150 wagon mules, 80 battery mules and are to have 120 more today…". Also included is a 2pp. oblong 8vo. sheet in which Crist enumerates for his sister at the pay scale of Union officers from 2nd Lt. ($103.00 per month) to Lieut. General ($720.00 per month). He then continues writing adding, in part: "…I was in the 13th Army Corps last. This division of Butler's Banks is the 19th. Many of the 19th & 13th have gone to Baltimore. Genl. McMillam our old Col. has gone, but as we are an artillery Regt they thot best to leave us here…we are waiting impahently for Sherman. We all Hope in Sherman…he is as good a Genl. as Grant…your brother, R. H. C…". The original transmittal cover is included. VG.
