War-date Union officer's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Lt. Robert H. Crist (1829-1912), Co. L, 1st Ind. Hvy. Artillery], New Orleans, La., Dec. 15, 1864, in part: "…Uncle Abraham says he will retract nothing and we must see him out in it. It may take years yet. I think it will…we should be off killing rebels…it will take $20,000,000 to pay off this department…I have been at church…to hear the famous Dr. Newman lecture. He is a smart man…his first lecture was to the young men and his business. The next to the young man & his country. the church holds some 12 or 1500 people. 3/4 of the audience were blue coats. The church was crowded. That makes 3 times I have been at church since I joined Lincoln's army…the New Orlean's people are not given to attending church…the theaters are always open Sunday night and all places of amusements, dance houses, beer gardens, billiard saloons, ten pin alleys. S. B. Howe's Circus is here now calling out immense crowds. A tent that will hold 4 or 5000 people is filled every night besides a good audience at noon…your most ob't. son, R. H. Crist."
