War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo, written by Sgt. Moses M. Ordway, 40th Mass. Vols., Chapin's Farm, [Va.], Nov. 10, 1864 to his brother, in part: "…we still remain in our old position…we have to turn out every other night…for a big scare, for some time past we have been kept in the pits all night…they kept the niggers in line of battle all night. I like to see them put through. We are waiting rather impatiently to learn the result of the election although we have no doubt but Lincoln will be elected…[for] Thanksgiving we are going to have little hardtack and pork…we are…glad to get that. Sometimes it troubles Joe Gray terribly to be on short rations. It takes a big quantity to fill up that big belly of his, but Joe says…it is all for the Union…about the soldier vote. They don't all go for Lincoln. There are a good many McClellan men here all of the[m] Irishmen which is a good many…Moses M. Ordway." The original transmittal cover is also included. VG
