War-date Union soldier's letter, 3 1/4pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Moses M. Ordway, 40th Mass. Vols., Chapin's Farm, Va., Nov. 19, 1864 to his brother, in part: "…how did the election pass of. It seems Lincoln is elected for four years more. Now you will see whether the South will give up or not. I think I shall have a chance to reenlist again…we are going to have a Thanksgiving. $20,000 have been appropriated to the 18th Corps. Somebody will undoubtedly make a big speculation on that, but very little we shall ever see. They are trying to get up a story that we are to be mounted again…Col. [Guy V.] Henry has been offered the command of a division of cavalry…Moses M. Ordway…[Nov. 20]…a part of our Reg. were detailed to work on old Butler's canal. They worked all night up to their knees in mud. The Jonnies pitching in the Dutch Oven all the time…it is a dirty job…there was heavy firing on the left last night…M. M. O." The original transmittal cover is also included.
