A, 34th USCT or 2nd South Carolina, (former captain 8th Maine Vols), Jacksonville, Fla., Feb. 24, 1864, in part: "…we arrived here on the 10th…and landed without opposition. The largest part of our forces took up a line of march for Lake City, but were met last saturday by a greatly superior force of rebels and got badly beaten…were obliged to fall back with considerable loss. Since the fight we have been greatly reinforced and are ready for anything. If our Gouldsboro boys are afraid to fight they had better not come out here…but wait three or four months when it will be perfectly safe…I intended buying a place on St. Helena Island, but the best land has been sold…yours in love, Alonzo…". Minor toning, else VG
