A good war-date Union officer's letter, 1p. folio, written by Captain Augustus Alonzo Hoit, Co. A, 34th USCT or 2nd South Carolina, (former captain 8th Maine Vols), Magnolia, Fl., Sept. 4, 1864, in part: "…we have made a raid…and marched more than 100 miles without seeing a reb except now and then a scouting party. A detachment of mounted infantry and cavalry which set out with us were nearly all captured at Gainesville about 20 miles from where we were encamped. Our mounted force was about 200 men while that of the rebs was about 1200…I am happy to hear that there is a prospect that some of the enterprising young men of Gouldsboro will be allowed the privilege of fighting for their country. I shall not reenlist so they need not count on me to help fill their quota. I can hold my commission as long as I please…I shall do so a hill longer for I want to see the end of this war. We are nicely situated…Magnolia is about 30 miles above Jacksonville and is famous for its sulphur springs. We are building…a nice fort and are perfectly safe…give my love to the children and tell them…that their father did not run away to escape the draft. Yours in love, Alonzo." Toned, else VG
