A good war-date Union officer's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Captain Augustus Alonzo Hoit, Co. A, 34th USCT or 2nd South Carolina, (former captain 8th Maine Vols), "Deveaux Point, S. C., Dec. 28, 1864," in part: "…there has been no musket firing since the 9th, but we kept up our artillery fire…it is occasionally returned by the rebs but without damage. Gen. Sherman has taken Savannah and is after the Johnnies in some other direction. I hope he will devastate the whole state of S. C. before investing Charleston so that any force that may be sent from Lee…cannot subsist without bringing their supplies with them…if Gen. Sherman makes a circuit through the north part of S. C. as far as N. C. and returns to Charleston by a line near the coast and cutting a swath 50 miles wide, the state will be pretty nearly used up and Charleston would surrender in short time…Lee could not retreat to S. C. I have not much faith in Gen. Grant's ability to capture Lee's army, but…Lee will be compelled to evacuate Virginia…Mr. Jeff is in a tight place. I have exchanged my horse for a mare. She belonged to the 4th Mass. Cavalry and has been in several fights. She was in the Gainesville [Florida] affair and saved her rider by out running all the rebel horses. She is very kind and stands fire first rate and is just right for a family horse…mare are not allowed in the cavalry. I shall try to get a mate for her…Yours in love, Alonzo." VG
