A good war-date Union officer's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by 1st Lt. Augustus S. Tuttle, 36th Mass. Vols., City Point, Va., July 21, 1864 concerning his final meeting of Captain Otis W. Holmes (formerly of the 25th Mass. Vols.) who was paralyzed from wounds received during the June 1864 battles of Petersburg, in part: "In regard to Capt. Holmes I am sorry to state that he said nothing about his wife or family to me. I went to see him as soon as I heard of his being wounded…all he said was that he was paralyzed all over with the exception of his left arm. I took hold of his left hand and asked him if I could do anything for him…he said he would like to have his canteen filled with lemonade. I furnished his attendant with the lemons…he seemed like a person all tired out and could not talk without much exertion. The adjutant went to see him before I did…as I was going to the front on Sunday morning…he was wounded. I met him on the way down to City Point in an Ambulances I spoke to him but could not make any talk with him. He spoke quite sharp to the colored boy that was with him to keep the flies off him. After returning from the front I tried to find him but could not…and now he is gone. Old Co. F has been spoken to [battle of Cold Harbor, June 3, 1864] very loudly. I am glad the major or I should say Col.[Thaddeus L. Baker WIA Cold Harbor, June 3, 1864] is recovering and that it has, through the providence of God, been my good fortune to escape…there are times that we are all exposed…I hope to be spared to return home and live happily for many years…A. S. Tuttle." Near fine.
