A rather morbid war-date Union soldier's letter, 3 1/2pp. 8vo., written, on "U. S. Christian Commission" stationery, by Pvt. Lemuel P. Foss, Co. F, 13th New Hampshire Vols., "Gangreen Camp, [Hampton, Va.], Oct. 3, 1864", in part: "You will think [it] strange to see a letter headed like this from me…about 7 weeks ago I had a sore break out on my leg. It kept getting worse…when the gangrene got into it and I was sent here. The gangrene is coming out now and…there will be no trouble in saving my leg. I shall always be lame…if I get…to use the leg at all…the bone is…effected. The gangrene has eaten the flesh out in a space about four inches across it each way…the bone is right out in plain sight…I did not think of getting the gangrene into it…direct…as follows U S Gen Hospital, Hampton, Va. The col of my Regt [bvt. brig. gen. Aaron F. Stevens] is here wounded. The capt of my company is killed. David Hall, Joseph Smith and Charles Burte of my company is here wounded…a good many others from the Regt are here wounded. Good bye, Lem. Foss." The original "U. S. Christian Commission" transmittal cover, cancelled "DUE 3", is also included. VG
