Broadside Anti Secession Speech By Stephens titled "The Great Union Speech of Hon. Alexander Stephens, Vice President of the Southern Confederacy." Presented with bold headline, single column preface and the extracted speech in two columns, this is an attractive and important broadside. Stephens delivered the speech to the Convention Of The People Of Georgia Called To Consider The Propriety Of Secession. In it, Stephens makes the case AGAINST secession concluding in part "… to overthrow such a Government … under which we have lived for more than three-quarters of a century ... is the height of madness, folly and wickedness, to which I can neither lend my sanction nor my vote." 11" x 20," wide margins, fine, published by Courrier & Freeman Steam Presses. In November 1860, after Lincoln had been elected President, Governor Joe Brown of Georgia called the legislature into session to consider the question of calling a secession convention. The legislature heard from the leading Georgians of the day including Toombs and Stephens, each who would play important roles in the future Confederate government. The Secession Convention was called in January 1861, Stephens presented this speech January 7th and the secession ordinance was passed January 19, 1861.
