A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Harlan P. Martin, Co. E, 123rd New York Vols., Hardeeville, S. C., Jan. 24, 1865 to his mother, in part: "…they come in good time just as we are starting on a campaign…we left savannah Jan. 17th and marched out here where we are stuck fast in the mud. We are encamped on the South Carolina side next to the Savannah river about 20 miles above the city…rations are brought to us by transports and we get full rations once again…the South Carolina swamps…is one sea of mud. Iy is a good thing the storm overtook us before we got father on…there has been rumors…of peace movements on the part of the rebels and think the postponement of the campaign is on account of it…I have no faith in peace rumors…bullets and bayonets…will have to settle it…H. P. Martin, Co. E, 123rd N. Y. V., 1st Brig., 1st Div., 20th A. C…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
