A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 2 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Harlan P. Martin, Co. E, 123rd New York Vols., Fayetteville, N. C., Mar. 12, 1865 to his mother, in part: "…communicates are opened…since starting from Savannah. We have had a long tedious, warm march of it, but successful in every point. I never felt better than on this campaign. My shoes gave out before I got half way here and for the last 2 or 3 weeks I have not had dry feet…we are all pretty well worn out, tired out, but not starved…we have only drew…2 days rations from Uncle Sam since leaving Sister's Ferry. We have marched about 350 miles and lived entirely on the country. We have met with but little opposition on the way. They only opposed our corps in two places…once at the North Edisto River and once at Thompson's Creek, near Chesterfield Court House. At both places one brigade cleaned them out. The other columns met with about the same opposition…we lost none from the regiment in killed and wounded, but a few are missing and died on the march. Charles Byrne from our company is missing as is also Henry Carter…Old Dan Guildson, George Osborn & Ira Stacy Co. K died on the march. We have no news…and so we know not what has transpired since leaving 'Yankeedom"…H. P. Martin, Co. E, 123rd N. Y. V., 1st Brig., 1st Div., 20th A. C., Sherman's Army…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
