A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Harlan P. Martin, Co. E, 123rd New York Vols., Gouldsboro, Wayne Co., N. C., Apr. 9, 1865 to his mother, in part: "…we have received the news of the capture of Richmond and dispersion of Lee's Army. It caused great rejoicing through the army…it looks now as if we should be home and the war closed up by fall. In the morning we started on our new campaign to clean out Johnson and his army…Raleigh will be our destination…some think we will not have much fighting…I should not wonder if they scattered and went to their homes for they must know their cause is lost…Sherman's army can go just where it please in the Confederacy…we now number over 100,000 men. Some of our convalescents came to us today from the west…we will carry light loads this summer. We don't mean to kill ourselves carrying loads the rest of our time…Gen. Mower of the 17th Corps now commands our corps and Gen. Williams now commands [our] division..H. P. Martin, Co. E, 123rd N. Y. V., 1st Brig., 1st Div., 20th, Army of Georgia…". VG
