War-date Union officer's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Lt. Robert H. Crist (1829-1912), Co. L, 1st Ind. Hvy. Artillery], "Pilot Cove, Mobile Point, Ala., Mar. 22, 1865," in part: "…I will give you an idea of this place. The lake is about 7 miles from the river. A canal is dug within 3/4 of a mile of the river. They dare not connect them as the soil is such they cannot make a lock. The river rises 9 feet above the canal and falls 3 feet below…six [miles] of the canal is through a Louisiana swamp that a horse dare not venture in. The dirt from the canal…is covered with shells making the famous shell road of New Orleans the nicest road to ride on…smooth & solid…a fine hotel and stables etc erected on it making a great resort for fast men & women to ride out & spent their money at. There is a gov't. R. Road build on the edge of the shell road…we use Miss. river steamboats to ship troops across the lake & through Miss. sound…steamers sometimes get caught in a gale & come in with smoke stacks blown down…we are lying here…in the sand waiting for the rebs…we will have to go and shell them out. Our forces are advancing. There has been firing all day…R. H. C…". The original transmittal cover is included. VG.
