Autograph Letter Signed by Sgt. E.H. ‘Hud’ McCall, 80th Ohio Volunteers, 2p. quarto, Resaca, Georgia, August 8, 1864, and reads in part: “...I see in the papers which we got today that Meade was repulsed before Petersburg. How sorry I feel to hear of any reverse to our arms. Everything seems to be working well down at Atlanta. I dont believe the people at home keep in as good heart about the war as the soldiers do...Marks of a heavy battle are visible every where around this little town. The place is strongly fortified and could be held against a large force with the few troops that are stationed here...Coming here Maj. Steeles was thrown from his horse, and the fall came near proving serious...I havent seen anything of the 5th O.V.I. for some time though I guess they are along the Rail Road somewhere as they belong to this Division...” Fine.
