War-date Union soldier's letter, 3 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Major Moses M. Ordway, 40th Mass. Vols., Chapin's Farm, Va., Jan. 17, 1865 to his brother, in part: "…I was appointed Sergt. Major of the 40th Mass. Vols.. I belong to Co. I no more. Gun & knapsack may go to the Devil now…I carry now a sword or saber. A Sergt. Major's position is on what is called the non commissioned staff. They mess by themselves and have a cook…I wish you would get a piece of flannel any color but red or white to go around my belly…your Brother, Moses M. Ordway." The original, "DUE 6" U. S.
