War-date Union soldier's letter, 1 1/2pp. folio, written by Sgt. Major Moses M. Ordway, 40th Mass. Vols., Richmond, Va., Apr. 8, 1865 to his brother, in part: "…we had a grand review…of our Div. (Devens). We marched all throughout the city. It was a big thing…the big bugs were flocking in here…the [Richmond] Whig…has got to be a good Union paper. Very quick it comes down heavy on the poor Rebs. It was a different story 10 days ago. The stores are beginning to open & sutlers are flocking in in great numbers. We are still outside of the city…we have got a pretty good sight to go into the city to do Provost Duty. If we do just look out for fun. Gen. Devens is working to be military governor. If he gets it we shall be pretties rue to go into the city…the city of Richmond…is about as large as Boston & Cambridge although not as compact. It is built mostly of brick…they are getting a map of it…most of the people here have come to the conclusion that Rebellion is about played out. Amusements in the city are good. They have two or three theaters…Macbeth is to be played on the 10th…your Brother, Moses M. Ordway." The original transmittal cover is also included. VG
