War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Sgt. Major Moses M. Ordway, 40th Mass. Vols., Manchester, Va., Apr. 27, 1865 to his brother, in part: "…we are now two miles from Richmond. A part of our Regt'mt. did duty there …when peace is declared it would not take a week to raise an army to go to Mexic. We received the news of the surrender of Johnston's army…old Kirby Smith we want next and the war is done. A great many here have an idea that we shall go home soon…I like Richmond first rate. It is fast becoming what it was before the war with the exception of the burned district. Trade is coming up. Broad St. presents quite a little appearance although the stores don't show…variety as Boston…the markets are not much like Quincy Market yet…I visited a grave yard…where 40,000 soldiers were buried. 8,000 were Union all died of wounds & disease. It was a hard sight…we shall probably have no more marching…being in the vicinity of Richmond we have to look pretty well…your Brother, Moses M. Ordway." The original, Medical Department, transmittal cover is also included. VG
