A good war-date Union officer's letter, 1p. 4to., written by Captain Augustus Alonzo Hoit, Co. A, 34th USCT or 2nd South Carolina, (former captain 8th Maine Vols), "Deveaux Neck, S. C., Jan. 16, 1865," in part: "…just come into camp from the rebel forts along the railroad between the Pocotaligo and Coosaw hatch rivers. The rebs left their works this morning and we took possession of them and then marched out and met Gen. Blair's Corps of Sherman's army at Pocotaligo River. Gen. Slocum's Corps is expected here tomorrow from Savannah and Gen. Howard's Corps is crossing Port Royal Ferry to join Gen. Blair. They burn everything as they go. I don't know whether we shall go with Sherman army or return to Fla…I hope we shall go with Gen. Sherman…Yours in love, Alonzo." Minor hole effecting part of one word, else VG
