A good war-date Union officer's letter, 1 1/2p. 8vo., written by Major Augustus Alonzo Hoit, Co. A, 34th USCT or 2nd South Carolina, (former captain 8th Maine Vols), Charleston, S. C., Feb. 24, 1865, in part: "I am in Charleston at last…our Regt is not…it is a miserable looking place. The buildings are badly shattered by our shells and some of the broad streets are overgrown with grass and weeds. I am commissioned as major of the Regt. There was a great rivalry for the position but I studied my books by the light of our camp fires since we started on this campaign…when we went before the board for examination I carried off the palm…I have fairly earned my position. I hope the boys will study their books as I did mine…yours in love, Alonzo." VG
