A good war-date Union officer's letter, 2p. 8vo., written by Major Augustus Alonzo Hoit, Co. A, 34th USCT or 2nd South Carolina, (former captain 8th Maine Vols), Charleston, S. C., Mar. 4, 1865, in part: "…we are waiting for a steamer to take us to Fla., but steamers are very scarce at present. Yesterday I came across an old acquaintance. He looks as though he had seen hard times. All the rest of my acquaintances in the city have been drafted by the rebs. The more I see of the city the more anxious I am to get away…it is the most disgusting place in the world. Like everything else in S. Carolina it is miserably cheap. everything in the state is woefully hollow and terribly rotten…of all the…corrupt things in this world the pretentions of the Southern people stand supreme and unapproachable. We are getting our just deserts for allowing ourselves to be governed by the arrogance and bluster of the South. I hope the war will last till we are taught the…difference between the people of the Free States and the people of the Slave States. We have been in the habit of looking up to self styled…Southerners when we ought to have looked down…". Unsigned, else VG
