A good Early postwar Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Corp. Roswell D. Bates, 1st Battalion Maine Vols., Charleston, S. C., Sept. 16, 1865, in part: "…at last got settled in the quiet village of Walhalla…it is indeed the most agreeable place we have yet been in…our quarters are in what used to be the hotel…I have seen enough of the south or at least S. C. to sicken me of the name…you spoke of the beauties of the South. I have not seen anything that looked very beautiful…the women as a general thing…do not were any shoes or stockings. The war…has made sad havoc among the villages. A great many of them are laid in ruins and where once life and ambition reined [now] can be seen but a pile of ruins…the occupants have fled no one knows where…Roswell D. Bates, Co. C, 1st Batt.
