A great early postwar political appointment letterpress broadside, 14 x 8 1/2 inches, [New York], September 1866, circular urging the confirmation of a Union general as customs collector of the Ninth Collection District, New York City--with support from the late President Lincoln. Thomas W. Egan, who had served as a brigadier general during the war, was appointed as a New York customs collector by President Johnson, but was awaiting confirmation by the Senate. This circular was prepared to help secure his appointment, and is filled with testimonials from Generals Grant, Meade, Hancock, Sickles, Hooker, and more. These generals give testimony of his gallantry at many battles included their personal observations of him in combat at such places such as Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, Chantilly and 2nd Bull Run. Other testimonies come from most notably U. S. Grant and the late President Lincoln, who had said "A very meritorious case. He should be promoted at the earliest opportunity." Folds, docketed "Egan" on verso, else near Fine.
