Photograph shows the execution of f a Colored Soldier, at Petersburg, Va., 1864. In the month of June 1864, the colored Federal soldier in front of Petersburg, attempted to commit a rape on a white women whose house chanced to be within the Federal lines. The woman’s husband was absent, serving in the Confederate army. The soldier, William Johnson, 23rd Regiment, United States Colored Troops (USCT), was caught, tried by court marshal, found guilty, and sentenced to be publically hanged. Under a flag of truce, the Confederates requested that they be permitted to hang Johnson in plain sight of both armies, between the lines. The request was granted and this is the a photograph of the event.
