New Orleans-born actress Pauline Cushman fully capitalized on her wartime experiences as a Union spy. Having been rescued from a Confederate death sentence, she was made a brevet major and hit the lecture circuit with her exploits. In fact, P.T. Barnum promoted her after the war. This image, showing Cushman in a major's uniform, carries a verso label captioned "MISS Major PAULINE CUSHMAN, The Federal scout and spy." The publisher is noted as E. & H.T. Anthony of New York. Overall moderate age toning. Very good condition.
