A good Civil War era letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Frank Foss, Stafford, [N. H.], Dec. 26, 1864 addressed to his brother who is Pvt. Lemuel P. Foss of the 13th New Hampshire, in part: "…I shall learn the art of photography…I am going to learn to take card photographs, ambrotypes, the copying process and views by the ambrotype process. Shackford says he will learn me to take negative views for copying to photographs on paper, views 24 by 24 inches…I have to pay him only $15 and board myself. John Nutter of Pittsfield asked me $40…which is the price for four weeks. Shackford think I can…learn in three weeks or I can stay as long as I choose in his saloon. He has a nice saloon. It cost $500.00. I shall want your camera to practice with and then I shall be ready to work with the same camera that I have practiced with. After I learn if you…let me have your bath dishes etc. I will pay you for the use of them or buy them…Frank…". Near fine.
