A complete and authentic issue of the New York Tribune, November 21, 1860, 8pp., disbound [unusually bound on the right side] , VG. From the interior, in a sub column headline, “Speech by the President Elect,” brings us an early Lincoln speech from Springfield. In part, “The evening progamme of Wide Awake procession, illuminations of the city, and display of fireworks, was carried out ... marched to the residence of Mr. lincoln ... gave cheer after cheer for ‘Honest Old Abe.’ Friends and Fellow Citizens; please excuse me on this occasion from speech making. I thank you for your kindness and compliment of this call. I thank you, in common with all others who have thought fit by your votes to indorse the republican cause. ... Yet in all our rejoicing, let us neither express ... any harsh feelings toward any citizen who by his vote has differed with us. Let us at all times remember that all American citizens are brothers of a common country, and should dwell together in the bonds of fraternal feeling. ....” Several Lincoln election related reports are also printed. For two weeks after his election, Abraham Lincoln remained relatively quiet on the policies his administration would pursue. On November 20, 1860, Lincoln broke his silence. He did it twice. The first time was when Lincoln was stopped by a parade of Wide Awakes on his way to a speech by Lyman Trumbull in Springfield, Illinois. The marchers stopped Lincoln's carriage and prevailed upon him for a few remarks as noted above. the Lyman Trumbull speech is also included.
