From the interior “The Disappoinment at Baltimore,” reports on President Elect Lincoln’s passing through. In small part, “Our city was thrown into a ferment .. that the President Elect ... travelling incog had arrived in Baltimore by special train from Harrisburg ... At one o’clock it was impossible to approach within a square of the depot from any direction. ... On the appearance on the platform of the Baltimore Republican Committee, they were received with groans and hooting. .. Mrs. Lincoln and her three sons proceeded tot he residence of Col. John Gittings ... Two cars for the Presidential party were standing on the side of the upper platform. ... The prevailing feeling excited by Mr. Lincoln’s quiet passage through Baltimore was one of relief. A large police force was detailed ... to protect the President and his suite on their passage through the streets against the turbulent pressure of the crowds ...”
