Excellent content letter regarding the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, 3 1/2 pgs., with original transmittal cover. The letter, from New York City, is dated April 13, 1865, and being sent to her friend George in Portland, Maine. The writer, Delia E. Suran, postpones sending the letter due to moving into another house in New York City, and resumes writing on May 12, 1865. In part "New York, April 13th, 65....I think we are getting along finely with the war, it will soon be finished. Then for another, how I think if McCl' had been elected the war would have lasted three or four more years. It is too bad he wasn't, don't you really think so....P.S. Write soon. Tell Aunt Ludia and Uncle Robert to write too. I want to tell you this, I always was, always will, be a "Lincolnite". He has done great things, and U.S. Grant too....". Obviously she is teasing the her friend George about her support for McClellan, as she is a supporter of President Lincoln. The letter resumes "May 12, 1865, A month ago I commenced this letter and had it sealed to send you. But, I was so busy house hunting that I neglected it. I have not written to any of my folks since....Oh! Wasn't it dreadful about the assassination of our beloved President. We all felt dreadfully. I loved him, although I joked with your about him - he was a good man. His enemies wish him alive now I guess. I hope our new President will hang every southerner that had anything to do with this war. Secessionists I mean. I saw our lost President while he lay in state here, also his funeral procession, it was splendid. We draped our house in mourning when we heard of his death....". The New York City funeral was attended by thousands of mourners, hoping to get a glimpse of the fallen Cheif Magistrate. An excellent content letter, especially regarding how she viewed Lincoln's body laying in state at city hall.
