April 16, 1864, Office of Provost Marshal General Letter to Orison Blunt, Very Fine. 9.75" x 7.75" manuscript letter on "A.A. Provost Marshal General And Superintendent Volunteer Recruiting Service, Southern Division of New York," letterhead. Addressed to Orison Blunt, as Chairman of the County Bounty Commission, by order of General Hays, with an extract from a telegram regarding recruitment: "...When enlisted after April fifteenth (15th) from deficient sub districts will be deducted from numbers required at that date; therefore deductions will be made up to latest moment before draft." A few scattered ink spots. Blunt is known for having contracted with the War Department to produce "Enfield-pattern" rifle muskets in 1861. Only 500 were completed and delivered in May 1862 before his contract was abruptly canceled because the arms were not properly proofed.
