Lieut. William M. Apple, 11th Indiana Infantry, 3pp., Fort McHenry, Baltimore, MD., April 22, 1865. Writing to his brother back home. Apple, recently mustered out of the 11th Indiana, attends the Lincoln funeral procession in Baltimore, MD., and also views President Lincoln's body. The letter, which is missing the last line at the bottom of the page, and his signature, comes from an archive of letters from Apple that was acquired several years ago by our consignor. The Lincoln funeral content is unaffected, and reads in part: "....I had the pleasure of seeing President Lincoln, he looks very natural. The procession marched around over the city for a short time, then he was taken to the post office where he remained for one hour and a half, and those yet to see him had the pleasure of doing so, but there was very few that got to see him, but I was determined to go in and see him, and I went but I'll tell you it was by the hardest. I never saw as large a crowd of people any where and the largest procession I ever saw any where. You will probably get to see him if he comes to Indianapolis. He went from here to Harrisburg, Pa...". Letters from the Lincoln's Baltimore are extremely scarce, and rarely, if ever, appear on the market.
