U.S. Sanitary Commission Letterhead, Union Letter, May 24, 1865. 8" x 5", 2 pages, Choice Very Fine or better. An interesting letter by Edward Allen (unsigned by him but addressed to his father) in which he recounts his experience at the review of the Army of the Potomac at Washington, DC on May 23. In part: “Today we have had our, I hope, last "grand review." A magnificent affair. Yesterday the Army of the Potomac was reviewed - all Washington and a large proportion of the Northern States were out I should judge by the immense crowds. I went as a spectator but the crowd was so jammed I couldn't get near the stands of the Pres & Cabinet or Gens & Coms neither the corps diplomatique nor the 'furriners.' Sherman was nearly buried alive with flowers & bouquets. 'There he is' 'there he goes' 'there, that's him' & 'that's Sherman' & such a stretching of neck to get a look at the wonderful (to them) Sherman..." Written on U.S. Sanitary Commission, "Special Relief" Office stationery with an accompanying matching envelope (posted and cancelled). Great content.
