BENJAMIN, Judah Phillip (1811-1884) was a lawyer and politician who was a United States Senator from Louisiana, a Cabinet officer of the Confederate States and, after his escape to the United Kingdom at the end of the American Civil War, an English barrister. Benjamin was the first person professing the Jewish faith to be elected to the United States Senate, and the first Jew to hold a cabinet position in North America. Document Signed “J.P. Benjamin” 2pp. folio, New Orleans, October 1, 1833, penned by Judge Charles Maurian, pertaining to the probate status of a will. It reads in small part: “...the same was written by J.P. Benjamin one of said witnesses and was aloud to the testaor and in presence of all five witnesses in presence of one another, and that said subscribing witnesses are all residents of this Parish...did hereunto set their hands after due reading hereof on the day month and year first before written...” Clean horizontal fold separation else very good.
