Newspaper, a complete and authentic issue of the National Intelligencer November 20, 1833, 4pp., disbound VG. From the front page and running 2 full columns we have various reports, “The Late Meteoric Shower,” “The Meteoric Phenomenon,” and “Shooting Stars.” Each is reporting the Leonids, a prolific meteor shower associated with the comet Tempel-Tuttle. The meteor storm of 1833 was of truly superlative strength. One estimate is over one hundred thousand meteors an hour, but another, done as the storm abated, estimated in excess of two hundred thousand meteors an hour over the entire region of North America east of the Rocky Mountains. In addition to these eye witness accounts, there is 2-1/2” x2-1/2,” illustration of the shower.
