The CDV is signed on the mount's lower front margin, the verso bearing a Samuel Masury, Boston backmark. Colfax, initially an Indiana newspaperman, drifted into politics and served as Speaker of the House during much of the Civil War. His highest office attained, however, was Vice-President under U. S Grant. Very good.
