DeWitt Clinton served as Mayor of New York City, as well as Governor of New York State. He oversaw the construction and completion of the Erie Canal, considered one of the monumental accomplishments in the early economic development of America. He also ran for President on the Federalist Ticket against James Madison in 1812. He was the "Peace" candidate, opposed to the War of 1812, and representing the commercial interests of the northeast. This extremely scarce 2 5/8" x 5" silk ribbon was issued on the occasion of his death in 1828. Like all Clinton material, it is quite rare, with only a handful known extant. Like other examples known it has some light age. The last Clinton mourning ribbon we know of coming to market was in Heritage Auction Galleries May 2012 Americana Auction. That ribbon, lot #38030, realized $836.00. A great opportunity to acquire a true rarity.
