Five page letter written from United States Attorney George C. Bates to Supreme Court Justice John McClean in Washingon, DC. Dated January 23, 1842, Columbus, Ohio, fine. Bates seeks Justice McCleans help for a woman accused of being a prosititute, which he feels is innocent. Reads in part: "....Gen. Brown informs me that Mrs. Senator Wilkins told him that he had called that morning stating to her that he visited Penn'a for the purpose of obtaining a divorce from his wife that she was a common prostitute, that she had criminal intercourse with me and others, and had fun in the open fields indulging herself in a manner that would disgrace the most common woman of the town, and that he intended to prosecute me for adultery....". Bates continues to state that her husband will be coming to Washington, DC where he plans on repeating to the story to others. He asks for McClean's help, asking "....I might to ask you as the friend of that poor and witched woman, in the name of Heaven and charity and justice to interpose your influence with the judge to pause and examine more fully than he has done all the facts and to calculate on th consequences of his strange course". The letter continues with more content about the woman and the charges. A most sorted letter written to a Supreme Court Justice.
