December 11, 1864, A Member of the U.S. Detective Police Writes to His Sister, Memphis, TN, Choice Very Fine. Autograph Letter, fine-laid paper, approx. 8" x 5," 3-page integral sheet. "H.C. Russell" writes his sister, "Miss M.E. Russell of Crawfordsville, Iowa. "I will write once more and see if that will bring an ansure [sic] from you I have been here since the 2d of last month and hav not got but one letter frome home and that was from Traher and he said that he had not received a letter frome me yet.... I have got a very nice place I am in the U.S. Detective Police I get one $100 pr month I do not think that I will stay longer than spring prhaps not so long. I am glad to hear that you hav got a school in town. It is getting dark Sister very dark and i will hav to clos I have no news to write ..." Accompanied by an original transmittal envelope, with three-cent postage stamp and circular cancellation stamp sharply reading "Memphis, TN". Page 3 is missing the top panel .
