Imprint, “Message of the President of the United States transmitting A Copy of General Taylor’s answer ...” signed in type by President James K. Polk, February 4, 1848, 4pp., disbound VG. After the Mexican War formally began, Taylor captured Monterrey and granted the Mexican army an eight-week armistice. Displeased, Pres. James K. Polk transferred Taylor's best troops to the command of Winfield Scott to serve in the invasion of Veracruz. Taylor ignored orders to remain in Monterrey and marched south to defeat a large Mexican force at the Battle of Buena Vista. He wrote his friend General Gaines complaining of the Washington interference, that letter being published in a newspaper. Taylor then is reprimanded by Secretary of War Marcy. This imprint is Taylor’s response to Marcy. Also included are digital copies of the Taylor/Gaines letter and the Marcy/Taylor Reprimand. VG
