BUCHANAN, James (1791-1868) 15th President of the United States (1857-1861). Congressman (1821-31); Senator (1834-45); Secretary of State (1845-49). Elected President in 1856, amongst the growing crisis of slavery, his inactions led the country to Civil War. He was also the only President to remain a bachelor throughout his term. Document Signed “James Buchanan” as Secretary of State, 1pp. 11-1/2”x16” on vellum, being a beautiful patent document issued to Christian Stoner of Gettysburg, August 28, 1847. Fine condition.
