Three partly-printed documents regarding former slave George Humphreys, who enlisted on November 22, 1863 in the 9th Regiment U.S. Colored Troops, Co H. The first document, 9.75" x 7.5", is headed "Office of Board of Claims For Slaves Enlisted In U.S. Service" and certifies that Josephus Humphreys of Somerset County, Maryland, has filed a "valid Deed of Manumission and Release of Service of George Humphreys, a man of African descent..." The second document, 8.5" x 8.", from the "Office of the U.S. Board of Claims" certifies that "George Humphreys of Co. H, 9th Reg't U.S.C.T." enlisted before April 1, 1864, and the lower portion documents a $100 payment to his former master. A 2¢ Revenue stamp is affixed. The third document, 14" x 8.5", is a "Proof of Ownership" in which Josephus Humphreys swears that he was "the owner of George Humphreys (a man of African descent) at the time of his enlistment..." Two 5¢ Revenue stamps are affixed. The third document is split across at lower fold, easily repaired; otherwise, light toning and minor edge splits. General Order No. 329, War Department 1863, allowed former owners to collect money for former slaves who enlisted before April 1, 1864. (3 documents)
