Excellent content letter pertaining to the assassination of President James Garfield. Dated July 12, 1881, Philadelphia, Pa., 2pp., fine. From attorney Daniel Dougherty to a Mr. Daniel. The letter was written while Garfield, who was shot on July 2, was still alive, and hopes were that he would survive. Garfield succumbed to his wounds on September 19, 1881. The letter begins with content pertaining speaking to the society of the Army of the Potomac, and other issues ofthe day. Dougherty then continues...."How universal has been the feeling of sympathy with Garfield since the assassins bullet was aimed at his life. I sincerely hope he will recover for our country's sake. If I could look with a partisan eye on such a calamity I might well argue that the elevation of Arthur would pave the way to a democratic President beyond all question. We should every way prefer that the President should live and serve out his term. This movement among sick men to raise a quarter of million for Mrs. Garfield - if the President live - should be abandoned"......"if Garfield refuses to let his life escape it will be a big feather in his cap"...."I have yet to see anything heroic in Garfield except in the way he has endured patience"...."the terrible ordeal through which he is passing....". A fine letter.
