GARFIELD, James (1831-1881) Twentieth President , Garfield rose to major general during the Civil War, served as chief of staff under Rosecrans and won his seat in Congress while still in uniform. He was elected President and Senator - both in 1880. He was shot by Charles Guiteau in Washington after only three months as President and died later in New Jersey.Signature “J.A. Garfield” as Member of Congress, removed from a larger document, framed with engraving of Garfield, and housed in an 9-1/2”x12’ frame. Fine condition.
