FORD, Gerald (1913-2006) Thirty-eighth President 1974-77, distinguished Member of the House 1949-73, appointed Vice President following the resignation of Spiro Agnew, and became President in August, 1974 following President Nixon's resignation. FORD, Betty (b. 1918) As first lady, Ford was active in social policy and shattered precedents as a politically active presidential wife (Time considered her "the most since Eleanor Roosevelt"). In the opinion of several historians, Ford had more impact upon history and culture than her husband.
