A complete and authentic issue of The Edinburgh Evening Courant, June 27, 1791, 4pp., disbound, VG. From the interior “Boxing, Ward and Mendoza” provides the preliminary details of this important match. In part, “Yesterday being the day appointed for deciding the bets on the match between Ward and Mendoza ... It was then proposed that they should fight in the Cricket Ground ... all bets should stand over. After this important point was settled, two battle were fought on the turf - the one by two followers in the crowd ... the other by the Ruffian and a countryman in which there was much game, but no appearance of skill ...At last the Ruffian struck and fell, without being struck in return, and the countryman kicked him as he lay. ..”
