1864, New York Civil War Recruiting Advertisement, Very Fine. 6.5" x 8.25," an official record of New York County's expenditure for an advertisement titled "THE COMING DRAFT - IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL WHO ARE ENROLLED AS LIABLE TO DRAFT" in the "Sunday Mercury" newspaper. An actual copy of the advertisement was attached to this form, which was then filed away with the rest of the accounting papers. The ad points out that "great complaint has been made that the quotas demanded of the County of New York have been excessive." However, the draft was based on the Enrollment, which apparently had not been corrected for some time, so this ad called for the correction of the rolls in order that the draft would be applied more equitably to the residents of New York. A very rare and unusual item, and unique insofar as this particular advertisement is concerned.
