Pair of Autograph Letters Signed by George Robinson, 123rd New York Infantry, 7p. total, with corresponding covers, in part: “...[7/31/1864 Before Atlanta] The Rebels seem to be determined that we shall come no farther, but we think we will. We advanced our Picket or rather our skirmish line yesterday morning at day light and in the operation our Brigade Pickets captured 48 privates and two commissioned officers. They advanced right up to the enemies line of works and dug rifle pits under fire of both artillery and musketry, suffering considerably but they hung on till they got a little sheltered in their rifle pits and they stay there yet. The Rebels have tried to shell them out but failed although they put shells through their slight works time and again. Our company lost another good man killed, shot through the head. His name was Albert Patter...This campaign has been a very destructive one to our Regt.... Capt. Gray was slightly wounded in the arm yesterday, also a Private of Co. D. also in the arm. Our Corps took over three hundred prisoners in their advance of the line yesterday...The Rebels shelled us pretty briskly yesterday but there was no one hurt except those in the skirmish line....[6/26/1864 On Right of center near Marietta]I am on Picket today and am in charge of the line....The pickets keep firing at each other and the bullets keep whistling over our heads but there has no accidents occured on our side yet and the boys are well covered and there is not much danger without they expose themselves unnessarily. They fired a while last evening but after a while they commenced to talk to each other and the firing ceased and they had a time with each other talking and it was amusing to hear the sharp talk they had. Our boys would ask them what they had to eat, and how Johnston liked Hooker, and when they were going to try to take our Battery again that was on our skirmish line...” Both VG.
