Autograph Letter Signed, “Thos. H.L. Paine” 1st Lt. 37th Illinois, 2p. quarto, Head Quarters, Co. ‘B’ 37th Ills. Infy, Columbus, Texas, October 2, 1865, with cover addressed to Brevet Brig. General E. B. Payne, it reads in part: “...When Col. Black went home he promissed me to recommend me to the Adjt. Genl. for a Captaincy in Co. ‘G’ or ‘C’ provided Capt Huntley was promoted to Major or Lt. Col. Col. Kenicott has sent some recommend forward which have not been acted on as yet, and I should be obliged to you if you could find out who they are for...” with full regimental ID. VG.
