Partly-printed Union naval discharge, 1p. 7”x2-3/4”, June 29, 1865, “U.S. Receiving Ship ‘North Carolina’,” printed onboard the ‘North Carolina’ by William Birdsall. Authorized and signed by Captain J.P. McKristry, it reads in part: “...please discharge from the Naval service John Holland ‘Lakawanna’..” Light folds, and soiling, small tear at bottom, else VG. During the War the Lackawanna was a member of the West Gulf Blockading Squadron. After capturing several blockade runners she served in the blockade during the summer of 1864, while Farragut prepared for his conquest of Mobile Bay. On August 5, 1864, she engaged the Confederate ironclad ram Tennessee and was victorious as the Union forces closed the last major gulf port to the South. She would serve the remainder of the War operating in the gulf and enforcing the blockades. She docked in New York on June 28, 1865, and was decommissioned a month later.
